Celebrating fifty years since Johnny Cash recorded his album ‘At Folsom Prison’

Year: 2005
Country: USA
Directed by: James Mangold

Cast:
Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny Cash)
Reese Witherspoon (June Carter)
Ginnifer Goodwin (Vivian Liberto)

Based on two autobiographies, this exceptional biopic follows Johnny Cash’s early life, through his marriage to Vivian Liberto, romance with June Carter, ascent to the country music scene, early recordings at Sun Studios and performances alongside Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, and beyond.

The film is set against a backdrop of Cash’s troubled life, plagued by his often catastrophic drug and alcohol abuse.

There’s a visceral chemistry between actors Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, with both delivering outstanding performances, and some scenes unscripted. Witherspoon’s performance in particular won extensive praise and many international awards.

All songs are performed by the actors, with both learning to play their respective instruments and taking vocal training, in preparation for the roles.

Walk the Line was nominated for five Oscars at the 78th Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Phoenix), and Best Actress (Witherspoon, which she won). It also won three Golden Globes and four BAFTA nominations, with Witherspoon winning Best Actress. The film grossed more than $170 million worldwide.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian wrote: “There’s a warm and generous richness to this biopic of country singing legend Johnny Cash; you’d need a heart of stone not to love it, and toes of stone not to tap along to the music’s driving force.”

This is essential viewing for lovers of music and film.
