The Nutcracker 14.12.14

Nutcracker_3D_Dance_of_the_Snowflakes_(c)Valentin_BaranovskyOn 18 December 1892, The Nutcracker was given its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. 122 years later, on 14 December 2014, we are thrilled to be screening it at Hoylake Community Cinema!

An all–time favourite ballet for the holiday season, the story begins with a Christmas Eve party and a young girl, Clara, being given a nutcracker doll by her godfather, Drosselmeyer. Later in the evening when Clara sleeps, she finds herself in the midst of the Nutcracker’s battle against the Mouse King and his army of mice. Coming to her Nutcracker’s aid, he is transformed into a Prince and journeys with Clara to an enchanted island where celebrations are held in their honour.

This production showcases the impeccable virtuosity of two of the Mariinsky Theatre’s rising stars – Alina Somova as Clara the Princess (Masha in the original Russian) and Vladimir Shklyarov as the Prince Nutcracker. This production is Wassili Vainonen’s version of the ballet that was first staged in 1934 and was chosen in 1992 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ballet’s premiere.

With Tchaikovsky’s eternally popular score, the grand staging and exquisite costumes, this Mariinsky Theatre production of The Nutcracker  will be perfect holiday entertainment for the whole family.
