Written and directed by British director Andrea Arnold, the deeply affecting drama Fish Tank tells the story of Mia Williams (Katie Jarvis), a volatile 15-year-old who lives on a sink housing estate in Essex with her single mother, Joanne, and younger sister, Tyler. Socially isolated, Mia is a loner who has fallen out with her friends, and spends her time practising her own hip-hop dance routines in a deserted flat.
Her mother Joanne’s new boyfriend Conor, a charming and handsome Irishman, compliments Mia on her dance moves, encourages her to enter a dancing competition, and lends her a camera to film her routines.
Recognising Mia’s vulnerability, Conor extends his influence over her by becoming increasingly flirtatious, while at the same time continuing his relationship with her mother. Mia inevitably becomes attracted to him, with devastating consequences.
As the situation unravels, and a secret about Conor emerges, Mia finds herself facing dramatic and difficult choices about the direction of her life, leading to an unforgettably tense and dramatic denouement.
Fish Tank deservedly won the Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival as well as the 2010 BAFTA for Best British Film. Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian wrote: “With a terrific performance by debutant Katie Jarvis, this gritty Essex drama shows that director Andrea Arnold is Ken Loach’s natural successor.”
