In this beautifully shot Terence Davies film we are treated to extraordinary performances from Cynthia Nixon (as reclusive American poet Emily Dickinson) and her co-stars Emma Bell and Jennifer Ehle (as the young free-thinking Emily and her sister Lavinia Dickinson respectively).

Produced by Liverpool-based Hurricane Films, the film has been highly praised internationally by critics, and repeatedly described as a ‘masterpiece’, with Andrew Pulver writing in The Guardian: “After a long period in the wilderness, A Quiet Passion is Davies’ third feature since his comeback documentary Of Time and the City, following the Terence Rattigan adaptation The Deep Blue Sea, and then Sunset Song. We should be relieved that there’s no diminution of powers: rather, the opposite, in that Davies appears to be getting better every time.”

Set against a background of the stifling conventions of the time, Emily Dickinson’s poetic social commentary and biting wit, are a treat to watch.

But balancing moments of taut, claustrophobic drama reveal her deep vulnerability and underlying frustration amid a growing emotional isolation, despite the support of her loving family.
