Produced and directed by Ireland’s most prolific film director of the 20th century, Brian Desmond Hurst, this wonderfully festive adaptation of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol, sees the role of Ebenezer Scrooge performed with delightful relish by one of the finest British comic actors of all time, Alastair Sim.

Set on Christmas Eve, 1843, the miserly Scrooge considers Christmas to be “humbug’, but a series of disturbing hallucinations through the night plague him. He is visited first by the ghost of his dead partner, Jacob Marley (Hordern), who warns Scrooge to repent or be condemned to walk the earth forever, bound in chains “forged in life” by greed. Scrooge is then visited by three spirits; the Spirit of Christmas Past (Dolan); the Spirit of Christmas Present (de Wolff); and the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come (Konarski).

With each visit, Scrooge becomes ever more remorseful, eventually awakening in the present, ecstatic to discover that it is still Christmas Day, and that he still has an opportunity to do good. He immediately begins to put right the wrongs of his past; raising salaries for his employees and taking care of them, notably by helping Tiny Tim (Dearman) back to health.

Often cited as the best Christmas film of all time, Scrooge is essential Christmas viewing and what better than seeing it on the big screen in Hoylake? A joy for all the family.
